Hiking in the Orilla Verde–Part 2
On a recent spring trip to the Taos, NM area, we discovered the Orilla Verde (or Green Rim) Recreation Area, along the Rio Grande Gorge. In the mood for a hike, we selected the La Vista Verde Trail for our venture as it promised a beautiful view of the Rio Grande Gorge. It did not disappoint. The trail was well-marked and easy to follow. From time to time, we were able to glimpse the big river running... [Read more]
Hiking in the Orilla Verde–Part 1
On a recent spring trip to Taos, NM, we discovered the Orilla Verde Recreation area, just north of the town of Taos, for the first time. Named for the vegetation which forms a “Green Rim” (i.e. Orilla Verde) along the Rio Grande Gorge, we checked out the trails as we were in the mood for a spring hike. After looking over our options, then chose the La Vista Verde Hike which promised a beautiful... [Read more]
Where to Eat? Taos Pizza Outback
Back in the free spirited days of the 1960s a group of ambitious but laid back young people got the idea to open a pizza restaurant in Taos, NM where they lived. They located a place to rent behind another establishment, making it a bit difficult to find. Customers would enter the business in front and ask, “Where’s the pizza?” “Outback” was always the response. Thus was born the name of... [Read more]
The Beautiful Orilla Verde Recreation Area
After our busy week setting up internet service and our new mailing address for our soon-to-be residence in Taos, NM, we were in need of a little R & R on our spring break trip. In the mood for a spring hike, we had read an article in the Taos News about the Orilla Verde Recreation Area, just north of town. We headed up that way on a beautiful spring day when the weather was sunny (as is usual)... [Read more]
Hiking–What to Wear?
It’s pretty easy to select what you will wear if you are hiking during the summer months. In spring and fall, however, it can be a bit tricky to be dressed for every, or even most, weather conditions. We love to hike and over the years we have developed clothing selections for our hikes that compensate and keep you warm and cool in most any weather. Here are my thoughts about what to wear on that... [Read more]
Spring Break with Six College Students–Part 3: Ashley’s Birthday
While this post is not specifically concerned with RVing, like the other two I have posted about our recent spring trip, it does focus on enjoying the outdoors, traveling to new and different areas and spending quality time with loved ones and friends. Picking up on our trip with our spring breaking college students, after three days, their skiing plans and passes exhausted, our crew was in search... [Read more]
Spring Break with Six College Students–Part 2: The Skiing!
Through a series of unusual circumstances, we invited four college students (plus our own two) to spend Spring Break in our partially furnished home in Taos, NM. Despite my concern, it all worked out well. We brought along every extra sheet and pillow we had at home and had plenty of sleeping space for all students. Three slept in the largest bedroom that will become my office, two on the sleeper sofa... [Read more]
Spring Break with Six College Students! Part 1–The Plan
Through a series of rather curious coincidences, we ended up spending Spring Break, traditionally our annual Easter trip, with six college students. Six terrific college students., four of whom we were meeting for the first time. Both our son and daughter attend college at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, seven hours away from our home in Manitowoc, WI. For the past year now, our son has been a... [Read more]
A Visit to “The Showboat Branson Belle”
I have been writing in my last few posts about our spring time trips to Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO. On each of our trips to Silver Dollar City and Branson, we chose to also visit the remarkable Showboat Branson Belle. Because we had purchased multiple day tickets for the Theme Park, we received a break on our Showboat cruise but, even without the discount, it was worth the ticket price. We were... [Read more]
Silver Dollar City–the Roller-Coasters!
As far as my children were concerned, this was the main attraction at Silver Dollar City near Branson, MO; everything else was secondary. The rides, specifically the roller-coasters, were, after all, the main reason we made the decision to visit Silver Dollar City on an Easter break in the first place. They did not let us, or our dare-devil children, down. Our family favorite was BuzzSaw Falls. This... [Read more]
