…and speaking of wine
We just purchased our tickets for the 17th Finger Lakes Wine Festival held at the Watkins Glen Race Track in Watkins Glen, NY. This festival has wineries from all over New York and Pennsylvania and a guaranteed good time.
A group of us went to this festival a few years ago and we had a blast. We didn’t make it in time to get one of the coveted RV sites on the racetrack, but we stayed at a really nice RV park just a few miles away. So we parked the camper and then went up the hill about a half a mile to the racetrack. They race NASCAR at this track (just in case you’ve never heard of it). As we got there, John, my husband, noticed that he could take a ride in a pace car for only ten dollars. He acted like a little kid asking, “Honey, do you mind? It’s only $10″ He was pretty funny, so yes we went for a ride in the pace car. Had a pretty good time sliding around the racetrack at about 110 mph!
After we were through with our racecar experience it was time to do some serious wine tasting. A friend of mine, Jack had never been wine tasting before and was a little timid about approaching the tables. I told him, “it’s really simple, you just stick your glass through the crowd and ask the nice lady behind the table to put some wine in it.” He tried that technique and by the third winery he had it down pat.
There are nearly a hundred wineries at the Finger Lakes Wine Festival featuring classical wines like Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc or Pinot Grigio or if you’re like me you find yourself drawn to the less classical varietals, you know the sweet stuff like fruit wines, ice wines or Riesling they have those too.
This festival is a three-day party, with so much to do and see (other than wine tasting) for instance, there is a Friday night toga party at the festival if you are feeling adventurous. Or perhaps you would like to learn how to pair wine with food, or Saturday evening you can go to the tasters banquet.
Lets say you’ve had your fill of wine for the day. If you go just down the hill from the racetrack you can enjoy a lovely meal over looking Lake Seneca or walk up the Watkins Glen Gorge. The Gorge has over a hundred waterfalls and is a photographers dream!
I hope you can come hang out with us at the Finger Lakes Wine Festival on July 12 – 14, make sure you bring the camper, a camera and a designated driver.
