I’m guessing that most RVers don’t have a backup plan should a catastrophic situation occur.  Most of us don’t even like thinking about sickness, death or giving up privileges due to age.

I speak from experience when I advise you to sit down and discuss calmly with your spouse/mate/significant other, what you want done should anything catastrophic happen to you.  You won’t regret it because once you are in the midst of a crisis; it’s often difficult to think rationally.  Knowing there’s been a discussion, and hopefully instructions written down, you can look at the wishes expressed long ago and move forward.

The Pilot absolutely abhors conversations like this but knows that it’s something that we need to do periodically.  While we thoroughly enjoy full-time RVing we are also realistic enough to know it can’t last forever.

Our goal is to be ahead of the “Hang up the Keys” decision.  We would rather go out on our terms than to be forced into a decision that we aren’t ready to make.  We’ve tossed around a lot of ideas and have finally zeroed in on getting some land and parking the RV there while continuing to live in it.  Should other circumstances prevail, we would sell the RV and move into an apartment or condo.

My son has proposed that we park the RV on land he is buying to house his office.  It appears to be an ideal solution for us since it would put us close to family and other amenities, including medical facilities.

When making plans for living in one spot rather than on the move, be sure to write out a budget so that you have some idea of what it will cost and you can plan accordingly.  For us, we will need water, an electrical hook-up and sewer.  That can add up to a lot of dollars for getting the utilities installed.  We also need to look at a more secure way in and out of the couch that would make the stairs safer as we age.  I plan on being physically active…but just in case!

In some of the RV parks that we’ve been in we’ve noticed that park models seem to be a viable option. We’ve seen some nice looking ones that have all sorts of amenities that go with living in one of the park model villages.  We’ve also noticed that more and more RV parks have permanent residents allowing RVers to live in the area of their choice.

There are many options available for RVers later years.  The key is to explore them long before they’re ever needed.
