The hidden advantage of owning an RV

Posted By Canadianladybug On November 30, 2012 @ 12:26 pm In Uncategorized | 1 Comment

This blog post could probably be titled – How an RV can help you while looking at starting a new job or moving.   Let me tell you why…

A few months ago, my husband got a contract at a business in the Toronto area.  The RV was a blessing since we were able to packed it up and move temporarily for the duration of that contract.    It was also a blessing that we were homeschooling our kids because it was during the month of May.   Another advantage of this temporary move was that the campground was opening at the beginning of the month of May.   We saved money in taking a spot for the whole month.    In the midst of the contract, my husband got offered a permanent job with the company.   The contracting market in the National Capital had slowed down with all the changes that occurred in the past three years or so.

After much prayers and sensing we needed to go through this, we proceeded to packed, put our house for sale and move with the RV while waiting for our home to sell.    However, we had not planned for difficulties.   There were some issues within the business and after learning that the house market was going down, the house not selling and making calculations, we realized that for some reasons, we needed to get back home.

Does that mean that we are not called to move?  We don’t know.   For the time being we are keeping this as an option.  But we learned that doing all the hard work before hand was not necessary.

However, here’s how owning an RV can have some hidden advantages if you are in a situation similar to ours.   An RV will help you save precious money because you will have a house on the road.  Renting a spot at a campground is definitively less expensive than going to a hotel/motel or renting a place temporarily.   Besides, if you have the possibility of bringing your whole family with you everyone can give their thoughts on the new place you are looking to purchase.    Though in the hand, mom and dad are the decision makers.  But you can get a feel of the area for a family, whether there are parks close by and if there are other kids in the neighborhood.

You will also save on meals – no restaurants but home cooked meals on a regular basis.   This is particularly beneficial for people with food intolerance or food allergies.   You can stock the fridge with the kind of food you love to eat and not worry about paying tips to the server – only hugs to the cook would do!  *grin*

Other advantages would be having your own things around you; relaxing the way you want to in your own temporary home, visiting places around the area where you are thinking of moving, connecting with other homeschoolers in the area, and so on.      If you would have to stay at an hotel or rent a place, you probably wouldn’t take that time do so because you would think about getting out of there as soon as possible.   But with campgrounds allowing you to occupy a spot for an extended period of time, then you can take you time to search for the perfect home, visit various houses and speak to real estate representatives.

Bottom line, having and RV can save you money and time in the end while searching for a new place to stay when you need to move long distance.   Face it, not everyone have families in distant cities to help find a nest for your family.   I am saying this because not too long after we move back in town, our friends were in the midst of moving to Vancouver where her mother had found a place for them to rent.   In our case, the RV was a blessing in disguise and we definitively discovered a hidden advantage of owning our RV.  We didn’t have to be separated as a family and we grew closer to each other.   To top it off, we experience a new way of homeschooling, visited fun places together and had an experience that is out-of-the-ordinary.

At this point in time, we don’t know what the future has in store for us.   We might have to go back to Toronto for various reasons or a long term contract might start for my husband.    But one thing is for sure, we are not regretting purchasing our RV a few years ago and we are using it in numerous ways since then.   We would not go back on this decision.    We have too much of family memories with it to do so.
