Fabulous Fall Camping Activities–Part 1

That time of year when the weather cools and the leaves start to change colors can provide some of the best camping of the year. Fall camping can be some of the most beautiful and comfortable due to these changes. Many communities have terrific activities planned for fall, due to a decline in tourist travel as the children head back to school. This can only add to the fun that is possible at this time of year.
[1]This fall, we took the opportunity to attend two small communities’ versions of Oktoberfest, one in September, the other in October. While both had polka bands, they were actually quite different, both in terms of the mood presented and the activities available for participants. We thoroughly enjoyed both experiences.
[2]The Taos Ski Valley in northern New Mexico was our first Oktoberfest experience of the year. They had had the wisdom to combine their festivities with a 10K run up a ski hill (in which we did NOT participate) with the food and polka festivities of the typical German celebration. The event was held on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with temperatures in the high 70’s and sun, abundant. It was very pleasant to simply sit outside and enjoy the day. This was a good thing because, aside from Terry and myself, no one danced to the polka music that was playing. Even after hiking four hours up to the summit of Wheeler Peak that morning, we were still in the mood to dance. Being from Wisconsin, well, it’s just in our blood. It’s almost impossible not to dance when a polka is playing! To their credit, the band did lead the children in “The Chicken Dance” but few adults participated.

Food was provided by vendors but was a bit pricey. I spent $11 on a hamburger; Terry spent $8 for a brat. We were famished as we first arrived about 3:oo pm and had been hiking for four hours, having last eaten at breakfast, some eight hours before. The least expensive refreshment available was the beer, but given the money we had paid for food, we simply shared a glass.
Still, the setting in the Ski Valley was fabulous, as usual and the lovely weather simply made the day. There were a multitude of activities: vendors selling their wares in booths, a bouncy castle for young children, a volleyball court for teens and adults. Definitely the more family-friendly of the two celebrations, this is an event we would definitely attend again and may try to encourage other on-lookers to join us in the dancing.
