Bittersweet Moment

This past week-end, my six year old son Jérémy came to me while I was working in my office to ask me a question…

Mommy, when are we going to go to the RV?

I lift my eyes on what I was doing and saw him standing near the entrance of my office at home, looking at me with his big hazel eyes.   I couldn’t believe my ears.

You’ve got to be kidding me right?

No he was very serious with his question even if he knew that the RV was closed for the rest of the year.

Of all the questions he could have asked me, I didn’t expect that one.  You see my husband and my two oldest boys went to winterize the RV the week before Canadian Thanksgiving in early October.   It is a time of the year when it is bittersweet because we have so many memories with our children when going to the RV or travelling with it.   We usually go altogether to winterize it but this year we had to do it this way because of too many things to bring back at the trailer.

Besides after numerous weeks camping in our unsuspected adventure in moving that fell through (that’s for another post!), I have had my share of staying in the RV and needed a break.   But now as I am writing this post and see the warm temperatures that we had in the past few weeks, I wish we could just go for a day and enjoy a nice fall day at the campground.   Mind you there were some frisky days as well but the hidden advantage of having your RV at a campsite within two hours of drive makes you dream about walks in the wood and crispy leaves on the ground.

So for now, we are left to dream and think of future adventures.   One of our dreams would be to bring the kids to Florida and stay there for more than a month to experience the magic of the various places we could visit with the RV; Walt Disney World, LegoLand, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Bush Gardens, and Holy Land Experience.   Or drive to Colorado Springs to bring the kids up Pikes Peaks, visit the Grand Canyon or just to a trip across Canada to bring to kids to the Rockies and visit friends in BC.   These would be memories for everyone in the family.   Closing an RV for a season, allows you to dream and plan future trips that you want to make.   Some trips are grandiose while others are more feasible like visiting friends or family living in the Eastern part of the US, Chicago, Nashville or simply go somewhere to swim in the ocean.

As the colder months are slowly coming toward us, I am sure I will wish that we could spend an extended period of time in a warmer climate.   But winter has its advantages as well.  It reminds me of the analogy that everything has to die to come back to life.   At this point in time in our life, our RV has to go in hibernation for a few months so that I can enjoy it more when spring comes around because I will be looking forward to going to the RV and travelling as soon as March arrives next year.  It will be a new season, the kids will be one year older, and this mommy will look forward to the new experiences we will have during our 2013 RV season.

And if you are wondering what I told my six-year old son well I simply told him that it won’t be until next year because the RV was winterized.  He was a bit disappointed but quickly talked about his birthday in November shortly after that.   Kids have a way to bounce back when they are disappointed.
