Open the Bomb Bay Doors!

July 2, 2012 by · 2 Comments

There are things I learned about my RV the hard way and one in particular had to do with those bay doors. When I first heard the term, my mind immediately got the metaphor. They are huge and open so large that you could drop a bomb out of them. It could also be because they are bigger than your average fresh water bay.

The bays on an RV are so large, in fact, they can fit just about anything from bikes to picnic tables. I’ve always been fascinated when I have been at an RV park to see what my neighbors will pull out. It seems everyone has something cool from Camping World that goes from tiny to full size with a few cranks. It also seems like everyone who opens their bomb bays doesn’t know where their cool toy is. I am guessing that by the unwritten requirement to look in several bomb bays before you pull something out. Those with older motorhomes seem to have it even worse off as they go through a seeming archeological dig to sift the important from the memories of vacations past.

My children have also discovered that bays are huge. When I couldn’t reach something deep inside, I asked my four-year-old to get it for me. He did. For some odd reason, though, he didn’t want to get out. Almost like he was spelunking in a cave, he was happy to hide in the deep dark abyss that the bay provided. When he wouldn’t come  out when I called him, I teased him that I would shut the door. He didn’t budge. So I shut the door momentarily and opened it again after a few seconds. I had hoped that a little fear of the dark would motivate him to want to come out. Instead, I was met with little-boy giggles and him pleading, “Again.” Clearly, I wasn’t reaching him.

All these experiences have really got me wondering what to put in these things. They are obviously big enough to hold children. I am half tempted to set up a little bed in there for them. I know they would love it, though I doubt I’d get that one past the wife.

So the question remains, what should I put in the bays? Somehow, I was dumb enough to ask my wife this question. Before I knew it, she was on campingworld.com looking for items of value to fill that space. I might as well stuff it full of cash and leave the doors open while I drive at this point. We are sure to have something “necessary” there soon enough.

    Howdy Dalin,
Does your wife know she’s riding in a F-16 equipped Fighting Winnebago?? I’ve wanted mine equipped similarly to instill boost in the 30mph folks!! Or the speed demons that cut you off and take your ‘cushion’ space….

  2. Liked your post about storage on your RV. This ties in with a recent post I wrote dealing with organizing an RV. I just bought a new 5th wheel and was amazed at all the stuff I had packed in the old one. If you want, read it here: http://www.barryontheroad.com/2012/06/29/organize-rv-efficiency-convenience/
