Wisconsin Dells: Turns Out RVs and Waterparks Do Mix

On the surface, they seem like odd bedfellows—RVs and water parks. Most people associate the former with laid-back, look-at-the-scenery, slow-down-for-a-while style of recreation, while the latter is the very essence of manmade, adrenaline-inducing, slide ’til you drop kind of fun.
[1]Hold up though, because there’s one spot in the U.S. where it’s not an oil-and-water scenario. We’re talking Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, aka, the world’s water park capital. The beauty of this resort community is that it’s equal parts natural grandeur and manufactured entertainment, carefully balanced so you don’t have to choose one over the other.
If you’ve never visited, the defining scenery in Wisconsin Dells is the Wisconsin River, which literally bisects the community. And, oh, those sandstone bluffs that rise above the river are National GeographicTraveler-worthy. Lots of woods, state-designated rustic roads, and three state parks round out the picture.
On the manmade front, the community lays claim to more water parks than anyplace else on the planet, including the country’s largest outdoor water park, Noah’s Ark Water Park. Amazing, when you consider that the Dells is less than 20 square miles all told. Before you arrive, you’d best to study up on your water park rides, like what distinguishes a looping waterslide from a plunge slide from a tube run from a surf pool from a lazy river and so on and so on, in order to map out your day at the indoor or outdoor water park of your choice.
[2]As for where to stay, lots of travelers are surprised to know there are 20 campgrounds in and around the Wisconsin Dells with more than 3,200 sites. Translation: There are lots of RV options among the bunch. Stand Rock Campground pays homage to the rock formations in its name and to the outdoor recreation in its 100 acres of trails. Relax in the shade at KOA Campground by day, then take in a movie at their outdoor theater by night. Over at Sherwood Forest Camping & RV Park, the little ones will have a ball at the new splash pad they added last year—it’s a zero-depth attraction festooned with rainbow water arches, squirt cannons and geysers. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort has its own water playground right on the premises, complete with activity pool and twisty waterslide. Holiday Shores Campground & Resort offers stunning views of the Wisconsin River, while Mt. Olympus Zeus Village & Camp Resort puts you in close proximity to their famous outdoor water park.
In conclusion, don’t jump to conclusions about having to choose natural beauty over attractions. Wisconsin Dells delivers on both fronts, so pack in as much fun as you like knowing the natural beauty will be waiting for you.
When you’re ready to start planning, the official Wisconsin Dells visitor web site [3] is a great go-to resource.
