[1]Feel the earth tremble as a hundred year old steam field tractor passes by, plug your ears as the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) fire their historic canon or experience the powerful aboriginal art of Allen Sapp as he tell his amazing story. These are only a few experiences you will discover in North Battleford and Battleford, Saskatchewan this summer.
The summer kicks off with Canada Day (July 1) celebrations at Fort Battleford National Historic Site in the Town of Battleford and the Battlefords Provincial Park located about 30 minutes north of North Battleford.
If you are visiting us in July stop and take in the Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival. The festival, held July 20-22 in historic Battleford, is in its 39th year and is the oldest and one of the largest summer craft festival in Saskatchewan. A parade down the streets of Battleford and a fireworks display launch the festival each year.
The August 11- 17 period is packed with excitement. “Those Were The Days” at the Western Development Museum leads off activities August 11 and 12. The 1920s farm and village comes to life with demonstrations of a by-gone era including parades of agricultural implements extending back more than 100 years.
Those Were The Days is followed by the annual Northwest Territorial Days parade in downtown North Battleford August 13. Northwest Territorial Days activities including a midway, demolition derby and chuckwagon races occur August 14 to 17 at the North Battleford Exhibition grounds.
Historic weapons demonstrations performed by costumed interpreters occur each day during the summer at Fort Battleford National Historic Site. For visitors who like the paranormal, the fort also provides a series of ghost walks throughout the summer. The NWMP post was established in 1876 and played an important role in bringing law and order to Western Canada.\
BridgeFest, featuring a variety of music and entertainment, caps off summer activities on August 25.
The Battlefords has two campgrounds to serve recreational vehicles. The David Laird campground features 61 pull-through sites, including full-service sites. The campground is adjacent to Highway 16 (Yellowhead) on the eastern edge of the North Battleford. Eiling Kramer Campground, located in Battleford, features 74 pull-through sites, some of which are full service sites. In addition only a short drive away is Battlefords Provincial Park which boasts 317 sites.
