LANDSCAPING THE CAMPGROUND

Posted By Good Sam Team On April 7, 2012 @ 3:20 pm In Campgrounds & RV Parks | No Comments

“The flowers are absolutely beautiful” is a comment our office staff receives almost daily from our camping guests. Cross Creek Camping Resort in Delaware, Ohio is an award-winning camping resort. In addition to it being a very clean and friendly place, the landscaping and flowers throughout the grounds are just “beautiful.” At least that is the comment from most of the campers who come through our gate.Cross Creek Camping Resort Entrance [1]

It all started a few years ago with the support of Steve Cross, the owner; our maintenance staff; “Water Can Dave” and yours truly, “Flower Girl Rita.” Steve wanted to go “green” with the addition of more trees and shrubs and the expansion and addition of more flowerbeds both at the main entrance and throughout the park. Rita missed her home gardening and was eager and willing to help with the project. Of course, as the project started to expand, “Water Can Dave” was much in demand.

Around the end of January each year, Steve usually finds some good bargains on large lots of trees and shrubs for our maintenance people to water and protect from the winter freeze until late March when the “snow birds” Dave and Rita return and the ground can be dug and readied for planting. From early April until late fall, it is practically a full-time job: planting, watering, fertilizing, deadheading and, of course, weeding. Usually around the end of April, I begin my search for new and improved plants and container gardening ideas. I ask a lot of questions and receive a lot of information and help from the local nurseries. I am by no means a professional landscaper, but rather a home gardener who is learning by doing.Cross Creek Camping Resort Landscape [2]

The results have been amazing. The flowerbeds are blooming from early spring until late fall with bulbs, azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, lilacs, forsythia and a host of other flowering shrubs while the campground comes alive with flowering trees such as pear, crabapple, redbud and many others. Usually around the first of May, our guests find me busy planting the window boxes and some 50 containers including a lot of hanging baskets to be placed around the park once the threat of frost is past. Then I am on my knees for the next few weeks planting up to thirty-five flats of flowers that will bloom throughout the summer alongside the daylilies and hosta. “Water Can Dave” keeps very busy all summer long watering the beds and flowerpots to keep them at their best until we transition into fall when our beds and containers become ablaze with colorful mums to complement the fall foliage.

Landscaping the campground has encouraged many of our seasonal and annual campers to beautify their sites; so, as you can see, it truly has become a “win-win” situation for all. Steve has a beautiful, well-kept camping resort; our guests have three seasons of beautiful flowers and shrubs to enjoy; I am kept very busy enjoying what I love to do; and Dave has time to do a little work while still enjoying the other things he wants to do in retirement.Cross Creek Camping Resort Rock [3]
