This year, take the kids on an Easter Egg Hunt — with the President! Travel to DC, and participate in The White House Easter Egg Roll — an annual family event where kids hunt for and race Easter Eggs on the White House Lawn while enjoying storytelling and a visit with the Easter Bunny. This presidential holiday tradition dates back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes officially opened the White House grounds to local children for egg rolling on Easter Monday. Chimayo, New Mexico
Every Good Friday, thousands of people from around the country flock to the tiny village of Chimayo, New Mexico, to participate in a tradition dating back hundreds of years. The legend of this area states that in the 1800s, a wooden crucifix was miraculously unearthed by a local towns person. Excited, the villager brought the icon to a church located 8 miles out of town. But when the town awoke the next day, the crucifix was back in Chimayo! They tried to bring the religious symbol back to the church twice more, but each time the crucifix made its way back the town. Finally taking a hint, the residents of Chimayo built a chapel around the site—naming it “el Santuario de Nuestro Senor de Esquipulas”, which was renamed “El Santuario de Chimayó” —and kept the crucifix there. And on this site, reported miraculous healings have been happening for two hundred years.
Now, every Easter weekend, religious pilgrims travel from miles around to pay homage to this sacred site, and celebrate the holiday with people all around the country. The town participates with Easter re-enactments and religious pageantry.
