The RV Lifestyle….Our Little Piece of Paradise
By Cathy Miles
In the early part of 2001, we decided to upgrade from our Class C Leprechaun to a Horizon diesel pusher. Of course, being extremely excited, we couldn’t wait to spend our first night in our new rig. We grabbed our Woodall’s Campground Directory and found Cross Creek Camping Resort in the Columbus, Ohio area. This would be an ideal destination, as it would provide us with some road time from the dealership, yet it was only 150 miles from our home. We spent the night, and thus our lives were forever changed. While I was still teaching, our visits in the spring were limited to weekends. We would slip away to Cross Creek whenever we could. As the summer arrived, our stays became more regular and longer. With the onset of fall, our attention was focused on Ohio State football as we had season tickets.
Cross Creek Camping Resort was just the answer. We would arrive on Friday evening; take the unit to the “SHOE” on Saturday morning to tailgate; and after the game, return to Cross Creek for Saturday evening entertainment. Life couldn’t get any better, or so we thought. As time rolled on, our priorities changed. Our love for Cross Creek intensified, and our love for the RV lifestyle did, too. We traded our rig for a new Winnebago Vectra with all the amenities found in most modern homes. We discussed our options and decided that since my retirement was forthcoming, it might make sense to get an annual spot at Cross Creek for the summer. We acquired our spot and landscaped it so that our “summer getaway” was just perfect. We spent the entire summer, returning to our home only when necessary to do yard work.
In the fall after the final Buckeye game, we returned to our home and winterized the rig, all the while hoping winter would be short-lived. The winter preceding my retirement was one of the most exhausting times we had ever experienced. Each day we longed for the carefree RV lifestyle. The answer to our frustration was right before us…… sell the home and live the lifestyle we had grown to love. That is exactly what we did! We now spend the spring and summer at Cross Creek, enjoying the activities and amenities that Cross Creek has to offer. In late October, we hit the road for our winter destination in the Lakeland, Florida area. Although Cross Creek is open year round, we choose to leave behind frost, snow, ice and cold temperatures. We actually feel as if it is always summer. We spend a relaxing, carefree time in Florida living in our Vectra, keeping active and meeting new friends. Each day, however, we know that we are getting closer to our return to our little piece of paradise at Cross Creek in Delaware, Ohio.
