It Doesn’t Get Much Better than This

^[1]This has been an absolutely fabulous camping week!

We left Virginia last Sunday (November 6^th) and meandered down I-95 and 301 into North Carolina, crossed the border into South Carolina just outside of Tabor City, and parked the RV at Willow Tree RV Resort in Longs, SC. Longs is relatively close to Myrtle Beach – by close I mean you can drive there in 20 minutes or so but it is still far enough away that you can enjoy a low traffic, relaxed atmosphere.

^[2]The off-season rates at Willow Tree are extremely reasonable and the beauty of the turning trees, reflections on the 40 acre lake, Swans and Canada Geese swimming gracefully across the water, warm daytime temperatures and the fellowship of friends belonging to the Cedar Creek RV Owner’s Club ^[3] all come together to make everything feel perfect.

We were part of about 30 Cedar Creek RV owners assembled at Willow Tree for our end-of-season annual rally. This is a great group of folks with Christian values and fellowship dedicated to helping one-another (when a RV breaks or more) that love to eat and venture to new venues.

^[4]There were so many activities planned during the week that by the time we finally got back to our camper for the day I was so tired that I had no interest in writing a blog or story – which is why this one is about four or five day late.

Our group visited Brookgreen Gardens ^[5], attended “Christmas on Ice” at the Palace Theater ^[6], overwhelmed the keepers of a local winery with our enthusiastic crowd of “Creekers”, devoured shrimp and crab legs by the bushel at local restaurants and even at our “pot luck” evening dinners in the rec hall or back at the host’s campsite. These events produced dishes and deserts that are even more delicious than a Sunday-after-Church gathering.

^[7] We visited Camping World ^[8], bought all kinds of stuff to expand and simplify our RV travels and lifestyle and cleaned out the local outlet malls and flea markets.

^[9]On Thursday Nancy and I celebrated our anniversary with the group and a large cake that was quickly devoured by the group. It was sort of neat to have our anniversary on 11-11-11, something that won’t ever happen again!

Just about everyone pulled out this morning (Sunday the 14^th) but with the beautiful weather and sunshine Nancy and I decided to hang around for a few more days.

^[10]We just returned from the beach – a pristine, uncrowded expanse of white sand, dark blue water, sea birds, and seashells.

^[11]Oscar is recovering from back surgery (ruptured disc) so he could not play in the surf and dig for his ball in the sand as he is accustomed to doing. Poor little fellow had to ride in a baby stroller, which proved to be a laughable curiosity to several beach walkers that expected to see a human baby inside only to encounter a little black Daschund with a bald back and big, woeful brown eyes asking if they perhaps had his ball.

As expected, the Rand McNally RVND7710 ^[12] has proven to be a reliable navigation aid. My old eyes have not experienced the usual strain or search for my reading glasses to see what the display was trying to tell me. The routing has been consistent with the parameters I entered for our rig, routing me away from roads and bridges that a big rig has no business trying to maneuver. I’ll write more about how the RVND7710 is working out in a future blog.

Tomorrow morning we will be pulling out for yet another destination and hoping that the perfect fall weather continues.
