Would You Like S’More?

The S’more is a universal camping tradition, a trip essential. I would go as far to say that no camping trip would be complete without sticking a puffy marshmallow into the campfire, sticking it between layers of graham crackers and Hershey chocolate, then relishing every gooey, sweet bite, and licking your fingers after.

The origins of this camping delight are submerged in mystery. The exact time some culinary genius decided to marry graham crackers with chocolate and marshmallow is completely unknown. But here is what we do know: The first S’more recipe was printed in 1927 in a Girl Scout’s manual entitled “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” The legend of its name states that “S’more” was the sound the girl scouts would make with their mouths full of the marshmallow and chocolate, asking for “Some more, please.”

Today, there is fierce firestorm of debate between camping enthusiasts revolving around the S’more. There is the faction that argues that the marshmallow must be set on fire before being smushed between the crackers. But the other side would cry ‘Foul’, contending that a marshmallow must be slow roasted over the fire, and bedded quietly and patiently beside the chocolate and the graham crackers. Regardless of where you stand on these hotbed issues, most everyone agrees that the S’more is a camping must. Here are some recipes to put some dazzle in your campfire desert.

Fancy S’mancy S’more

8 graham cracker squares

8 ounces of dark chocolate

8 fresh strawberries (sliced)

8 large marshmallows

Place 1 ounce of chocolate on the graham crackers and place sliced strawberries on top. Skewer the marshmallows, and roast them, until they are a golden brown all over. Slide a warm marshmallow onto the chocolate and top it with another graham cracker.

Oatmeal Cookie S’mores

8 large oatmeal cookies

4 ounces milk chocolate

8 large marshmallows

Place 1 ounce of chocolate on the flat side of 4 of the oatmeal cookies. Skewer the marshmallows, and roast them, turning constantly, until they are a golden brown all over. Slide a warm marshmallow onto the chocolate and top it with another cookie (flat side down). Repeat for all cookies. Let sit for a couple of minutes to melt.

Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut

8 Graham Cracker Squares

8 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (sliced in half)

8 large marshmallows

Place one Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and on top of one Graham cracker square. Roast marshmallow to perfection, slide on top, place another graham cracker square on top and let the whole thing melt.

Go Bananas

8 peanut butter cookies

1 Banana (Sliced)

Nutella (Hazelnut Spread)

8 large marshmallows

Spread Nutella on one side of a peanut butter cookie, and add a slice of banana. Roast marshmallow to perfection, place on top of the banana, place another peanut butter cookie on top and enjoy.
