What a View! McCall RV Resort

Sometimes you are really surprised by what you find; this was the case for us when we went to the McCall RV Resort in McCall, Idaho.  As one of the regular guests said, it is like Idaho’s version of Lake Tahoe.  As we pulled into the city of McCall, we were impressed with how pretty the town was and the beautiful views of Payette Lake.

When we arrived at the McCall RV Resort (just a mile from the main street of the town), we were impressed with the Resort.  The resort is under new ownership, so some things are in a state of flux (like the signage), but when all is done, the resort will be even better.  It felt as though you were out in the woods, but we were only a mile or so from town.  The lodge was impressive, with an indoor pool, steam room, exercise equipment, and private bathroom/showers (and the cloth bath mats were a nice touch).  The courtyard was very nice and you could see that they could open up the pool area to make it part of the courtyard during nice weather.  The lodge is also a place where you could hold a fairly large event (their site mentions weddings).

The sites were roomy with large concrete patios, cable, phone, and full hookups.  Some sites are asphalt, while others are gravel.  We thought the square sites were interesting for groups traveling together—4 pull-throughs around a square, creating a common area inside the middle of the square (with each site having its own patio).  While there was lots of shade, we were still able to use our satellite.

Crossing flags

A neat crossing system

There is plenty to do in the area for all ages and interests—it ranges from outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, and fishing, to water activities on the lake and rivers, to plenty of shopping and dining in McCall.  While walking around McCall, we loved the method they had for crossing the main street—you go to the crosswalk, pick up an orange flag, and then cross.  The drivers are to stop when they see the orange flag in your hand at the crosswalk.

Since it was October and McCall is at an elevation of 5000 feet, it did get a little cold at night, but the days were warm and comfortable.  Some of the sites overlooked the North Fork of the Payette River and, based on the maps provided, the resort looks like it will double in size.  We enjoyed getting to choose our own site (it was a slow time), and the people were very friendly.  We also appreciated that they gave us “tourist maps” of the town, showing the restaurants, shopping, and other attractions.  The grocery store (Paul’s) was the nicest of that chain we’ve seen.

Our View at Dinner

We ate at Rupert’s in the Hotel McCall, and enjoyed a romantic dinner overlooking the lake.  The food and service was excellent, and we were surprised to find the special was prepared using beef cheek meat (since this is so popular in South Texas, it was fun to find in Idaho—although prepared quite differently).  Rupert’s had an excellent wine list as well.
