PA Grand Canyon

Last summer we took a trip to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon (which is actually Pine Creek Gorge [2]) with Hubby’s aunt and uncle. What a beautiful place to visit. There is a large rails-to-trails path at the bottom of the gorge, you can walk or ride bikes along this path. The twins went for a bike ride w/ their uncle as Hubby and I walked w/ his aunt as the little two biked along. We were able to see an immature bald eagle sitting in the trees just waiting for its lunch to swim on by.

At the top of the gorge is a beautiful look out point (Otter View) where you can see the gorge and the rolling hills in the background. We stood there and took in the beautiful site in awe of beauty that surrounded us. We took pictures, but somehow they just don’t seem to do the view justice. We didn’t feel brave enough to try out Turkey Trot Trail, but those we talked to at the top of the trail said it was worth the hike. We did however try out the trail on the opposite side of Turkey Trot and just walked a 1/2 mile or so to see different views.
There was a rainy day so we headed up to Wings of Eagles Discovery Center [4] in Horseheads NY. They have many planes and a helicopter on display. We were able to learn the history of the importance of aircraft in war. There was even a flight simulator for the guys to try to land on the deck of an aircraft carrier (yeah, not as easy as the pilots make it look). There’s also a guided tour of their working plains in the hanger next door. When the weather is cooperating they even do vintage airplane rides and gliders as well.

We didn’t know it at the time, but we booked our vacation for one of the two weeks they call summer (first 2 weeks in August) there in Wellsboro, so we were able to enjoy hiking in our shorts and t-shirts. We did talk about coming back to explore more trails and were warned to pack warmer clothes since it tends to get chilly there by the gorge. If you plan on going, make sure you’ve got sweatshirts packed for everyone in the camper. If you go to Woodalls, [6] you’ll find there are some campgrounds close by and a few further away, that would still be close enough to make the PA Grand Canyon a nice day trip.
We spent a long weekend there and were able to enjoy the surrounding area. We really enjoyed our time camping with Hubby’s aunt and uncle and getting to visit Hubby’s cousin and her family who live in the Wellsboro area. Just another great reason we love having our travel trailer, it’s a great excuse to have a family reunion.
