Georgia On My Mind

We always have a good time when we go camping, but there are a few that really stand out as great trips. Our trip to R-Ranch in Dahlonega, GA really stands out in my mind. It was the longest trip we’ve taken so far, a two-day ride from Southeastern PA, but well worth the trip.
We had decided to take the kids (then just the 3 of them) for their spring break. So with a stop over in North Carolina, we made our way to the hills of Northern Georgia. I must say, it’s beautiful country down there, but not a straight road to be seen for miles. I asked my friend who lives down in Cedar Grove why, she said it takes too much time to cut down the trees, just easier to pave around them. So after driving over hill and dale and getting a little misplaced a couple times we made our way into the campground.
A beautiful place, nestled down in the valley, we were thrilled. We set up camp and much to our surprise we had the whole place practically to ourselves, seems their school districts had their spring break a week earlier, so we were free to explore the hills to ourselves. Which by the way, don’t be nervous when you see a stick that looks like a snake lying in the path, or at least don’t let your 14 year old son see you nervous, you’ll never hear the end of it.
The two things that really stand out were the horseback riding, which was great because my twins found out they were natural born horsemen (they’re great grandfather would have been so proud). They had one day riding in the corral to get the feel for the horses. I do have a word of caution for those moms out there who want to join the kids on horseback, do a little jumping jack test w/ your upper undergarment before heading out on horseback. Let’s just say I’m glad we were in a single file when they decided to trot the horses, because brazier didn’t do that great of a job holding things where they’re supposed to be, so I’m sure I was quite the site, trying to hold the reins, manage to keep from blackening my eyes <blush> and not fall off the horse.
Our other extra part of the trip was going to Coke World Headquarters in Atlanta. The kids had a fun time, trying all the Cokes (people were right, don’t try the Beverly soda, trust me), plus just walking around in Atlanta, what a historical city. Although when we were warned about driving into Atlanta, we took it with a grain of salt, after all we’re from outside of Philly, we’ve driven the Blue Route and the Schuykill (know as the Surekill ) Express Way, how bad could they be going to Atlanta, people were right, you’ve really got to be on your toes down there!!
All it all, it was a great week. We loved Northern Georgia and felt like we could have stayed a month to just enjoy the people and places. There was plenty of time for the boys to fish with their daddy. The evenings were just the right temperature for a fire at one of the community fire rings. This is also where we came up w/ the “flaming ball of death” marshmallow joke we’re so fond of (those who’ve watched Pixar’s Bug’s Life will understand the joke). It’s the special blend of exciting things, mixed with the plain ordinary things that make a camping trip like this one stand out in all our minds.
