Do You Celebrate Valentine’s Day? by Debbie Block

Randy and I don’t do anything special for this day because we like to think we show love throughout the year and we don’t need a particular commercial day to celebrate our love for each other and for others. But I have to tell you if I’m at all honest that when Randy skipped this day the first year after we were married, I didn’t think it was cool at all. I bought him a shirt and tie (‘cause that was back when he had to wear the dreaded necktie) and a huge beautiful card that took an hour to pick out and I couldn’t wait for him to open it and couldn’t wait to see what he got me. I got NOTHING. It took me a good day or two to get over it, and it took his constant explaining how he feels about card stores saying when we should be in love instead of just always being in love. OK, now I completely believe in this modus operandi concerning Valentine’s Day. Of course, he’s had 31 years to prove that his position is the right one. I get flowers every month or more (yes, he STILL brings me flowers!) and he’s always extremely sweet on our anniversary. Like the year I got diamond earrings.

Diamond earrings for our 30th anniversary! Not bad. They were really pretty and I just couldn’t wait to try them on, so I headed right to the mirror over the sink in our RV. It was really embarrassing to have to call Randy in and explain how one of the earrings went down the sink drain. Now, Randy is a fairly patient man and almost never loses his cool. He was able to take the plumbing apart and recover the earring within just a few minutes, but I could tell by his eyes that he wasn’t very happy with me right then. He didn’t say very much, but only reminded me that I might want to close the drain before holding expensive jewelry over it with buttery fingers that I am famous for having. The butter fingers remark is what kept me from being as gracious as I can normally be. I had to calmly explain to my dearest that this really was his fault and not mine. He wanted to know how this could possibly be his fault and not mine. I thought it was all too clear, but explained to him anyway that if those diamonds had been a little larger, one would never have gone down that drain in the first place. Ladies, this is probably not a good thing to point out to a man who has just given you diamonds. Luckily, Randy has such a good sense of humor that he just said, “Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do!” So, I’m wondering if you celebrate Valentine’s Day and why or why not. Also, do you think my husband has just been tricking me???

We don’t usually celebrate valentines day on the 14th, because its too crowded. I once worked at a nice restaurant as a waitress and for valentines day our greedy owner rented tables and chairs in order to cram as many couples as possible into the small space. There was no intimacy and I thought the entire night must have been very disappointing for those couples who dined there that evening. Ever since then it has always been our practice to do something the weekend before or after.

As far as presents, well, I’ve yet to get any diamond earrings. (Though, we’ve only been married 6 1/2 years.) We usually spend if we can and don’t if we can’t. The most important thing to me is that we made it through another year, and we’re healthy and blessed!

Now that’s a GREAT story! I can only imagine the look on his face when he heard the “if they were bigger” comment. We do cards mostly…and if we get SUPER-LUCKY and have a babysitter, we might grab dinner.

Okay, so they weren’t that big….It’s the thought that counts, right?
